The Hong Kong Convention Enters into Force on 26 June

13-06-2025

Faroese Ships in International Trade Will Be Affected by New IMO Convention

The Hong Kong Convention, adopted by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) in 2009, aims to ensure that ship recycling is carried out in an environmentally sound and responsible manner. This means reducing pollution, improving working conditions, and safeguarding the rights of workers at recycling facilities around the world.

According to the convention, all commercial vessels must have an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) on board and ensure that the recycling facilities they use meet certain international standards.

Although the Faroe Islands have not ratified the convention, Faroese commercial vessels operating internationally are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the requirements and – if necessary – obtain a Statement of Compliance from their classification society. This helps ensure that Faroese vessels meet international standards and can prevent potential detentions under Port State Control, thereby avoiding unnecessary delays abroad.

Shipowners are therefore advised to contact their classification society for guidance and, if needed, to obtain an IHM and a Statement of Compliance.
