From January 1, 2025, the Faroese Maritime Authority will issue navigational notices for Faroese waters.
A navigational notice provides updates on changes to nautical charts, whether permanent or temporary. This is done in close collaboration with the Department for Land and Sea Charts at the Faroese Environment Agency.
The responsibility for marine aids to navigation and lighthouse authority was transferred on June 1, 2024, bringing the duty of issuing navigational notices under Faroese jurisdiction. Since then, the Danish Maritime Authority has been issuing navigational notices—Notice to Mariners—on behalf of Faroese authorities. However, starting January 1, Sjóvinnustýrið will take over and issue navigational notices for Faroese waters. These will no longer be included in the Danish Notice to Mariners.
It is therefore crucial that shipmasters and navigators register to receive navigational notices on Sjóvinnustýrið's website [HERE].
Please note that navigational notices should not be confused with navigational warnings, which are urgent messages for maritime traffic. MRCC Tórshavn is responsible for issuing navigational warnings.
