The Faroe Islands rank among the very top in the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS)’ latest Flag State Performance Table 2025/2026, which evaluates the performance of flag States across a range of international maritime conventions and control regimes.
Based on data from recognised international organisations such as the IMO, Paris MoU and Tokyo MoU, the assessment shows that the Faroe Islands meet international standards for safety, environmental protection and working conditions at sea.
The table assesses, among other things:
-
Performance under Port State Control
-
Ratification and implementation of key IMO and ILO conventions
-
Average age of the fleet
-
Reporting and notification practices
-
Participation in international audit schemes
The Faroe Islands achieve consistently positive performance indicators, placing the Faroese flag among the most reliable and respected internationally.
A quality mark for the Faroese flag
The strong ranking underlines that the Faroe Islands operate a flag that is associated with high quality, responsibility and effective flag State administration. This is of significant importance to shipowners, seafarers and international partners alike.
International recognition
The ICS Flag State Performance Table is widely used within the international shipping industry as a benchmark for the quality and credibility of flag States. A strong position in the table can therefore have a positive impact on both competitiveness and reputation.
