Does bullying and harassment occur on board Faroese vessels?

The Faroese Maritime Authority  is currently investigating the sosial work enviroment being aboard Faroese vessels.

Recently, there has been some focus on social environments and bullying in workplaces, and a Gallup survey has shown that this is a problem in some Faroese workplaces. We want to investigate whether bullying or other forms of harassment occur in the Faroese maritime sector and how such incidents are handled, if they do.

Through a new survey, we are reaching out to seafarers who have sailed on vessels registered in the Faroe Islands over the past five years. The survey aims to provide a clearer picture of psychological well-being and possible bullying onboard. We want as many seafarers as possible to participate so that we can get a representative view of well-being aboard Faroese vessels.

In the past, it was common for the youngest crew member, in particular, to be bullied. We have a strong sense that this is thankfully a thing of the past, but with this survey, we want to ensure that we get an accurate understanding of the current situation. To our knowledge, no previous surveys have been conducted on psychological environments and well-being aboard Faroese vessels.

The questionnaire will be sent to shipping companies and crew organizations to distribute to their employees. However, it is also possible to respond directly via this link if you have sailed on a Faroese-registered vessel within the last five years.
